Azerbaijani chess player helps Lazio Scacchi secure historic back-to-back victory

The “Lazio Scacchi” team, which includes Azerbaijani chess player Mirağa Ağayev, has achieved another major success in the 2026 “Master” series of the Italian Chess Championship.

Demonstrating confident performance in the tournament held in Darfo Boario Terme, the team was crowned Italian champions for the second consecutive time. In the final match, Lazio Scacchi defeated “Pedone Isolano Misilmeri,” making history by securing both of its championship titles in the same city, News Cover reports, citing Azerbaijan's State Committee on Work with Diaspora.

This title holds special significance for Mirağa Ağayev. The Azerbaijani player once again contributed important points to the team’s victory, just as he did in the previous season. Known in the Italian media as a “chess genius,” Ağayev’s achievements are widely celebrated both within the Azerbaijani diaspora and the international chess community.

Throughout the tournament, the team competed with a high-level roster, with Alexey Sarana playing on the top board. Alongside him, Mirağa Ağayev, Lorenzo Lodici, Aleksandr Fier, Sebastian Lermito, Danilo Brozzi, and experienced grandmaster Michele Godena stood out with strong performances in the final stage. The team was led by captain Marco Corvi, while the club president is Roberto Condorelli.
