Six Azerbaijanis Elected to Sweden’s Parliament and Local Councils

General elections have been held in the Kingdom of Sweden for the Riksdag, the country’s legislative body, as well as for 21 regional councils and 290 municipal councils.

According to the final election results, six members of the Azerbaijani diaspora representing several of Sweden’s leading political parties have been elected to the respective bodies and secured mandates.

Aylin Nuri, a member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and the party’s official spokesperson on transport policy, has been elected to the Swedish Parliament. Aida Karimli, a member of the Centre Party, has been elected to the Västra Götaland Regional Council and appointed as an alternate member of the Swedish Parliament.

Turan Aliyev, a member of the Centre Party, has been elected to the Partille Municipal Council. Aytaj Guliyeva, head of the Haninge branch of the Green Party, has been elected to the Haninge Municipal Council. Members of the Moderate Party, Aygun Alakbarova and Rihad Alakbarov, have won seats on the municipal councils of Älvkarleby and Gävle, respectively, News Cover reports, citing Azerbaijan's State Committee on Work with Diaspora.

The election of Azerbaijani diaspora members affiliated with different political parties and their representation at various levels of elected government have been seen as evidence of their active participation in Sweden’s social and political life.
